SGM Effects for West Side Story

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the American Broadway musical West Side story has been successful ever since its production start in the 1950.

In Romania, West Side Story has been adapted by choreographer and show director Razvan Mazilu to be presented at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival for the organisation Uniter – Theatre Union of Romania.

SGM’s Romanian partner, Five’s International, supplied a SGM package consisting of 12 SixPack blinders, four P-5 wash lights and two G-Spot moving heads. For the outer theatre building, the IP65-rated Q-7 RGBW flood lights were deployed for architectural illumination.

Lighting designer Alin Popa reported: “We needed the clean colours of the P-5, the fine dimming of the SixPack, the power of the G-Spot and its large pallet of colour temperature control settings. The SGM equipment did most of the show. It’s the biggest musical in Romania and I worked with the fixtures for a week – on average 20 hours a day. The fixtures are wonderful. The two G-Spots were used for contre-jour for their generous zoom and CTC. I ran the G-Spots in silent mode so I didn’t even hear them during operation.”

The Silent Mode of the G-Spot is one of the moving heads four fan settings for quiet operation to accommodate especially theatre and opera applications, where fan control and silent operation is essential.

The popular musical show embraced Romania’s young generation of talents, allowing 21 actors the opportunity to perform professionally in a large-scale production, which proved highly well-received by the audience.
