Leyard LED technology transforms Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall into immersive visitor experience

Electrosonic & Leyard Europe

Leyard Europe LED display technology has been installed at Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall, a historic landmark in North East England, as part of a major renovation project completed in June 2025. Electrosonic specified the Leyard display as the visual centrepiece of the building’s new Interpretation Space, using dynamic LED technology to bring the history of mining and the lives of those who shaped the region vividly to life.

Founded in 1915 at the height of the UK’s coal industry, Redhills has long been a symbol of community, social progress and workers’ rights in North East England. Today, the building has been reimagined as a hub for a new solidarity economy, championing local people, skills and creativity, while offering tours that connect visitors with its extraordinary past. Working closely with the team at Redhills, Electrosonic’s goal to weave AV technology throughout the visitor journey in a way that deepens engagement, without compromising the building’s historical character.

The centrepiece of the Interpretation Space is a Leyard VDS Complete DHD196 LED video wall, installed in an 8-wide by 4-high panel configuration. Measuring 4.8 metres by 1.35 metres and running at 3840 by 1080 resolution with a 1.2mm pixel pitch, the display’s ultra-wide 32:9 format draws visitors into the scene with striking visual depth, all underpinned by a surround sound system that heightens the sense of atmosphere and place.

The Interpretation Space has been crafted to evoke the underground world of a working colliery. Its dim lighting, structural pit props and textured ‘coal face’ wall surfaces place visitors directly into the miners’ world. Beyond its role as an immersive heritage experience, the room is also built for versatility, equally suited to presentations and commercial hire. Full integration with the main hall’s AV infrastructure means the space can shift between functions with ease, without losing its immersive quality.

The Interpretation Space achieves what the renovation set out to do: give voice to the miners and communities who shaped the region, while leaving the soul of the building untouched. Through Electrosonic’s design, build and ongoing support, Redhills now offers a visitor experience that is as thought-provoking as it is authentic, ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come.

“Working on Redhills was a genuinely special project,” said Matt Cruse, Sales Consultant at Electrosonic. “The Leyard LED display technology was the ideal choice for a venue of this kind, delivering the visual impact and flexibility needed for an immersive heritage experience, while integrating discreetly into a building of such historical importance. Seeing the stories of the Durham miners come to life on screen in a space like this is exactly why we do what we do.”
