One System Touches Down at Utah American Football Stadium

When the University of Utah upgraded their stadium Football C Kyle Whittingham was adamant upon one thing – he wanted a loudspeaker system that he could use for team warm-ups and practice. Performance Audio, also located in Salt Lake City, met his demands by mounting sets of loudspeakers, each made up of 212/HC loudspeakers and 118/HSB subwoofers, under the lip of the south end zone.

Jake Peery, System Design and Installation Manager for Performance Audio explained further: “After we installed the system we fired it up for the coach to check out. He went to the 40-yard line, we cranked it up and he was very, very happy.”

There were a number of requirements for the warm-up system. One was that it needed to be very weather resistant, since the system would be installed outdoors. Another was that the quality of its music reproduction had to be exceptional. Coach Whittingham, having heard a similar One Systems system at Texas A&M’s football practice field, was insistent about having the same quality for the Utes players.

The 212/HC is a high-output two-element array loudspeaker designed to produce very high sound pressure levels with broad bandwidth content and very high intelligibility. The loudspeaker is loaded with two 12-inch direct radiator transducers in a vertically oriented array. The enclosure can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The top 12-inch element is also a coaxial system that features a large format compression driver. The two element array provides improved polar control, making it ideal for reverberant indoor spaces and outdoor spaces.

The 212/HC utilises 316-grade stainless steel (marine-grade) for all structural and rigging points. All associated One Systems rigging accessories are also 316-grade stainless. All metal components that are not structural feature a proprietary marine-grade powder coat over 304-grade stainless. This makes the 212/HC ideal for direct weather installations like the practice area at the University of Utah.

Jake concluded with the following: “It’s like a personal boom box for the coach. He wanted his own system that sounded fantastic – and he got exactly that with the One System loudspeakers.”
