Aloha

May/June 2008

The tallest clubbing venue on KL's Jalan Pinang clubbing strip is Aloha - located between Beach Club and Rum Jungle. Despite being opened over a year ago, some areas sparkle as if completed only yesterday.

As with many other KL venues, the designers and builders didn’t muck about: construction and installation were completed in under six months. Aloha features one of NEXO’s most significant club installs in Malaysia and is beautifully lit with SGM Giotto Spots and Victory IIs.

Concept Audio were responsible for the install, selected because they had been the previous supplier on other projects by Aloha management including Club De Macau in KL’s Renaissance Hotel, Sunshine Classic on Asian Heritage Row and the recently opened De Paradise in Johor Baru. Very fortunately for Concept Audio and Aloha’s clientele, the sound install was included as part of the original plan.

This 30,000 square foot mega-club has three levels consisting of dance club, dance hall, bistro and restaurant, and an exclusive VIP Lounge. The lofty dance hall is fronted with the Oahu Bar, Beer Garden (outdoors) and overlooked by the Nihau Lounge and the VIP Sky Lounge on the 1st and 2nd floors respectively. But for pure disco, it’s the visually fascinating subterranean Honolulu Club that really sparkles as one of the most intricately designed discotheques in Asia.

The DJ console forms the peacock centrepiece in front of a mosaic dancefloor surrounded by giant mushrooms, swirling sculpted pillars and cocoon-like VIP booths. All in all, it is like some moonlit psychedelic Hawaiian dreamscape. Who was the interior designer? According to Sam Chiko, E&P Manager Aloha Group Of Companies, Honolulu Club was designed by the same team who did all of Aloha - Vatworks.

mondo*dr asked Sam Chiko what client market Aloha attracts. Do different levels of Aloha attract different customers?

“At the ground floor Oahu Bar, Nihau Lounge 1st floor and 2nd floor Sky Lounge we generally play retro, top 40 and ‘mambo jumbo’ with nightly live band performances attracting the mature crowd. Underground at Honolulu is where we played more new hip-hop, R&B and house for the younger generation.”

Anything else special at Aloha? Every Wednesday is ladies Hula Nite. If five ladies come in a group they walk away with a free bottle of Black Label!
