Hexstatic

January / February 2009

Another partnership that is pushing the boundaries of electronic entertainment and visuals is the UK duo of Hexstatic – Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson.

They hooked up in the late-90s and have relentlessly challenged both themselves and their audiences in terms of their diverse audio-visual output.
Indeed, from Warren Hill’s pioneering work with Coldcut on the award-winning audio-visual release ‘Timber’ to projecting the face of MC Juice Aleem onto a massive ‘water screen’ over the Thames and hitting the streets of London with their guerrilla gigs, where they project onto buildings and the like, Hexstatic have always been focused on innovative new ways of displaying their content beyond clubland. Not that they are ever short of ‘regular’ club/festival gigs mind, where they might project their fun, funky electro personalities via plasmas or even video walls.
Back in 2004 Hexstatic helped Pioneer in its development of the first DVD video deck in ‘CDJ’ form – the DVJ-X1. And the duo has used DVJs ever since to perform live AV sets, along with Pioneer’s new SVM-1000 AV mixer, Apple Macs running Vidvox Grid, and, quite often, a DJM-800 mixer controlling an Edirol V4 for Brunson’s additional layers.
After exploring the possibilities of 3D work, notably on their 2004 AV album Master View, where they provided 3D versions of some videos, Hexstatic has continued to develop 3D AV content. One new way to display content that Warren Hill’s currently looking into through his 3D experiments is using Philip’s WOWvx technology/HD auto-stereoscopic multi-view displays. And no 3D glasses are required with these screens, folks! What could be next, smell-a-vision? (Who knows with these guys?)
What we do know is that following on from their Videos, Remixes & Rarities DVD/CD album release of 2008, February sees Hexstatic return to Koko in London for a second live performance at Videocrash, alongside an AV set from Bomb the Bass and a Serato DJ-VJ set by DJ Food and DK. This is definitely one to look out for, as last time Hexstatic projected their high-impact imagery onto some sharktooth netting, which hung down from the stage, formed a semi-transparent veil between them and the crowd. Far from isolating them from their audience, however, it engaged viewers, drawing them further into the head-spinning live show.
