Is VJ culture making an impact on club design? Are owners incorporating the technology and space to allow VJs a decent set up?
In a number of cases yes. The Big Chill House in Kings Cross for instance has excellent facilities for VJs with good equipment, their own booth and several projectors set up around the bar (including slide projectors).
Are clubs and bars attractive to VJs as performance spaces?
Some have moved with the times yet others still do not have much of a provision
What is (or what would be) the ideal setup for a VJ entering a club?
To be treated on par to a DJ (Ha ha! Only joking there). An Edirol V4 with access to DVD players, and some slide projectors, perhaps.phenomenon? Are there regional differences in style / demand / popularity?
What makes an excellent VJ set?
Innovative use of the technology and those that use the projection equipment outside the 4:3 ratio box. Those that utilise the space or environment more. For me it is still pretty un-imaginative to think of of the screen as a giant television! As far as material is concerned, for me it is always when self-shot/animated footage has been used.
Who’s equipment do you use?
I use my own slide rig of 9 - 12 kodak carousels linked up with either AVL doves and Genesis software or Dataton controllers.
Who’s work do you admire most?
d-fuse, hexstatic, adam seaman
