ORB

September / October 2008

Warrington, UK

ORB is a brand new concept from Northampton-based Mushroom Lighting Technology (MLT), taking the versatility of LED screen technology to a new level of creativity and will be seen for the first time at PLASA 2008.

Originally bespoke-designed as the centrepiece for Warrington’s Synergy nightclub, ORB is a 2m diameter, fully mechanised globe, populated with almost 8,000 LEDs 4 lamp clusters. It is capable of displaying low-resolution, full video imagery and provides a stunning lighting effect.

“We designed ORB in record time for Synergy,” explains MLT director, Simon Harris. “Because of the level of experience our team has, it took just one week to design and less than that to construct. But that speed does not mean that build quality has been compromised. All elements of ORB, from the polycarbonate carapace and aluminium frame to the LEDs themselves, have been sourced from top end manufacturers and our R&D team has ensured engineering values are first class.”

ORB is a lightweight, modular structure that can be sited in a multitude of locations, either indoors or outdoors, due to its IP55 rating. Its modularity means that it is easy to transport to site and easy to construct, thus keeping build time to a minimum.

Since its installation into Synergy, ORB has received an incredible amount of interest and MLT’s order book is rapidly filling. “Everyone that has seen ORB has loved it,” adds Harris. “Their reaction has been that it is one of the most original lighting fixtures to come onto the market in recent times and we anticipate a great future for the product.”
